Are you a mid-level Industrial Designer, looking for role in south east Melbourne? Do you have experience of designing consumer goods or other products? I’m recruiting for a market leading brand, designing and manufacturing a broad range of hydration, food storage and other consumer products for the Australian and overseas markets.

My client is a well-known Australian company, headquartered in south east Melbourne, with 65 years of successful innovation and design in the market. Due to their growing pipeline of projects across existing and new categories, they are expanding their in-house design operations.
The Role
In this Industrial Designer role, you will support the Design function to:
- Design beautiful new products suitable for Australia, UK, NZ and the rest of the EU market
- Develop commercially viable product design solutions that are consumer led, innovative and distinctive
- Ensure that all newly designed products meet all relevant manufacturing standards, QA regulations, and brand expectations
- Focus on design for manufacturing efficiency
- Prepare design solutions from ideation through to production ready, using sketching, presentation renders, CAD, rendering, prototyping and 3D printing
- Manage multiple projects through the Stage Gate and NPD Process
- Engage with project stakeholders to collaboratively release products to market on-time and within budget
- Provide technical assistance related to product, design and manufacturing to all stakeholders and departments
- Review and analyse product samples to accurately identify improvements
- Contribute to the NPD process: product/material research, IP searches, concept development, prototyping, testing and validating
- Develop a strong understanding of manufacturing standards, practices, tooling capabilities and QA standards
- Liaise with manufacturing suppliers ensuring all design projects are completed to commercial budgets and tight timeframes
With at least seven years’ postgraduate experience, agency or inhouse, designing consumer goods (plastics preferable), you’ll have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design or Product Design Engineering
- Strong portfolio showing all stages of design process, focusing on ideation, concepting, production CAD, rendering and general presentation
- Effective problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in Solidworks 3D modelling and drawing, primarily for plastics design
- 3D printing (in-house) and prototyping fabrication
- Experience in design for manufacture with a strong understanding of associated costs
- Experience in detailed design and basic mechanical engineering e.g. moving parts, seal interference, etc.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing techniques including injection moulding, over moulding
- Ability to multi-task across several projects at different stages
- Knowledge of material characteristics and properties including, polymers and other materials
- Previous work experience within a commercial or manufacturing environment preferred
